During any job interview it is priority to know if a person would fit in the work place or not. Subjective examination can be similar to job interview, as safety comes first you have to see if this patient is for you or would they have to be referred to another health care provider (Further scans, another speciality or even emergency).
And why is that?
There are certain signs and symptoms that when observed in a patient’s examination or history alert us to the fact that something could be seriously wrong as a sign of serious pathology. This is what so called red flags.
Although there is no definite physical examination testing to confirm the presence of serious pathology, red flags remain the best tools at the clinician’s disposal to raise suspicion of serious spinal pathology, when used within the context of a thorough subjective patient history and physical examination (Finucane et al, 2020).
